Healing the Demon-Possessed Boy
Primary Reference: Mark 9:14-29
Descending from the Mount of Transfiguration — where His divine glory had been revealed to Peter, James, and John — Jesus found His remaining disciples in a heated argument with the scribes, surrounded by a large crowd. A father had brought his demon-possessed son to the disciples, but they had been unable to cast the spirit out. The boy suffered terribly: the spirit made him mute, threw him into convulsions, caused him to foam at the mouth, grind his teeth, and become rigid. It had thrown him into fire and water to destroy him since childhood.
The father cried out to Jesus with raw honesty: "If thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us." Jesus responded by redirecting the focus from His ability to the father's faith: "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." The father's reply is one of the most achingly honest prayers in Scripture: "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." Jesus then rebuked the spirit: "Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him."
The spirit shrieked, convulsed the boy violently, and came out, leaving him so still that many thought he was dead. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up. When the disciples later asked privately why they had failed, Jesus answered, "This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting." This miracle revealed that some spiritual battles require deeper dependence on God, that honest faith — even mixed with doubt — is sufficient for Christ to work, and that the power to deliver comes not from technique but from intimate communion with the Father.
