Raising Jairus's Daughter

Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, fell at Jesus' feet in desperate supplication, begging Him to come lay hands on his twelve-year-old daughter who was at the point of death. As Jesus went with him, the delay caused by the healing of the woman with the issue of blood proved seemingly fatal — messengers arrived with devastating news: "Thy daughter is dead; why troublest thou the Master any further?" But Jesus, overhearing the message, spoke words that cut through despair: "Be not afraid, only believe."
Arriving at Jairus' house, Jesus found professional mourners already wailing. He dismissed them with a statement that provoked ridicule: "The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth." Taking only Peter, James, John, and the girl's parents, He entered the room where the child lay, took her by the hand, and spoke the Aramaic words, "Talitha cumi" — "Little girl, I say unto thee, arise." Immediately the twelve-year-old girl stood up and walked, and Jesus instructed them to give her something to eat.
This miracle demonstrated Jesus' absolute authority over death itself. The mourners laughed at His statement that the girl was sleeping, but Jesus used this language deliberately — for the One who is the Resurrection and the Life, death is no more permanent than sleep. By taking only His three closest disciples and the parents, Jesus performed this miracle in intimate privacy, away from the spectacle-seeking crowds. His tenderness in telling the parents to feed the child reveals His concern for practical, human needs even in the midst of supernatural power. Jairus' daughter was raised by the same voice that will one day call all believers from their graves.
