Healing Peter's Mother-in-Law

Upon entering Peter's home in Capernaum, Jesus found Peter's mother-in-law lying sick with a high fever. The simplicity of this miracle is striking — Jesus touched her hand, and immediately the fever left her. She rose and began serving them, demonstrating the completeness of her healing. There was no gradual recovery, no lingering weakness; the restoration was instant and total.
This miracle is significant in its domestic intimacy. While Jesus performed many dramatic miracles before large crowds, here He entered a private home and healed a single woman from a common ailment. It reveals that no concern is too small for Christ's attention, no person too ordinary for His compassion. The God who calms the sea also cures a fever; the One who feeds thousands also cares for one woman in one home.
Mark and Luke record that the healing occurred on the Sabbath, after Jesus had already cast out an unclean spirit in the synagogue. That evening, the whole city gathered at the door, and Jesus healed all who were brought to Him. Matthew interprets these healings as fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy: "Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses." In healing Peter's mother-in-law, Jesus demonstrated that He is the Servant of the Lord prophesied by Isaiah, who bears the burdens of His people.
