Healing the Man with the Withered Hand

On the Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and encountered a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees watched closely, looking for an opportunity to accuse Him of violating the Sabbath. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, called the man forward and posed a question that silenced His critics: "Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill?"
When the Pharisees remained silent, Jesus looked around at them with grief and anger at the hardness of their hearts. He then commanded the man, "Stretch forth thine hand." As the man obeyed, his hand was completely restored — as whole as the other. Jesus healed without touching the man or performing any physical labor, exposing the absurdity of the Pharisees' accusation while demonstrating His divine authority.
This miracle provoked a decisive response from the religious leaders: the Pharisees immediately went out and conspired with the Herodians — their usual political enemies — to destroy Jesus. The healing of the withered hand became a turning point in the opposition to Christ. It demonstrated that Jesus valued human wholeness above religious tradition, that mercy triumphs over empty ritual, and that the Sabbath was made for man's benefit, not as a burden. The very people who claimed to serve God plotted to kill the One who healed on God's holy day.
