Healing the Woman Bent for Eighteen Years

While teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus noticed a woman who had been bent over and unable to straighten herself for eighteen years. Luke, the physician, describes her condition as a "spirit of infirmity" — a physical disability with a spiritual dimension. She had not come seeking healing; she was simply there to worship despite her affliction. Jesus saw her, called her to Him, and declared, "Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity."
When Jesus laid His hands on her, she was immediately made straight and glorified God. The synagogue ruler, indignant that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, addressed the crowd rather than Jesus directly, insisting they come on the other six days for healing. Jesus rebuked this hypocrisy sharply: "Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?"
Then Jesus made a profound declaration: "Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" By calling her a "daughter of Abraham," Jesus affirmed her dignity, value, and covenant standing. By attributing her bondage to Satan, He revealed the spiritual warfare behind physical suffering. And by choosing the Sabbath — the day of rest and liberation — He demonstrated that true Sabbath observance is setting captives free. His adversaries were put to shame, while the people rejoiced.
