Healing Two Blind Men
Primary Reference: Matthew 9:27-31
As Jesus departed from Jairus' house, two blind men followed Him, crying out, "Thou Son of David, have mercy on us!" Their use of the messianic title "Son of David" revealed their spiritual insight — though physically blind, they could see what many sighted people could not: that Jesus was the promised Messiah of Israel. They pursued Him with persistence, following Him into the house where He was staying.
Jesus asked them a direct question: "Believe ye that I am able to do this?" When they answered, "Yea, Lord," He touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith be it unto you." Their eyes were opened immediately. Jesus sternly charged them to tell no one, but they spread the news throughout the entire region. Their disobedience, though understandable in their joy, contrasted with the faith that had earned their healing.
This miracle fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies that the Messiah would open the eyes of the blind. Isaiah had foretold that when the Anointed One came, "the eyes of the blind shall be opened." The healing also carried spiritual symbolism — physical blindness represented the spiritual blindness of humanity, and Jesus came as the Light of the World to give sight to all who believe. The condition Jesus placed — "according to your faith" — established the principle that faith is the channel through which Christ's power flows into human experience.
