Healing the Centurion's Servant

A Roman centurion in Capernaum approached Jesus, pleading for his servant who lay at home paralyzed and suffering terribly. When Jesus offered to come and heal the servant, the centurion's response astonished even Jesus Himself: "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed." The centurion, a military commander, understood authority — he gave orders and they were obeyed, and he recognized that Jesus had the same authority over sickness.
Jesus marveled at the centurion's faith — one of only two times Scripture records Jesus expressing amazement — and declared, "I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel." He then prophesied that many would come from east and west to sit at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the children of the kingdom would be cast out. In that very hour, the servant was healed.
This miracle carries enormous theological significance. A Gentile military officer demonstrated greater faith than anyone in Israel, foreshadowing the worldwide scope of the gospel. The centurion's faith was not in Jesus' physical presence but in the authority of His word — a model of faith for all believers across all ages who trust in Christ without seeing Him. His words, "Speak the word only," have echoed through centuries of Christian worship, recognizing that Christ's authority needs no proximity, no ritual, no intermediary — only faith in His sovereign command.
