Healing the Deaf and Mute Man
Primary Reference: Mark 7:31-37
In the region of the Decapolis — Gentile territory east of the Jordan — people brought to Jesus a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, begging Him to lay hands on him. Jesus took the man aside from the crowd privately, put His fingers into the man's ears, spat, and touched his tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and spoke the Aramaic word "Ephphatha" — "Be opened."
Immediately the man's ears were opened and his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. The crowd was astonished beyond measure, declaring, "He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak." Their words unknowingly echoed Genesis, where God looked upon His creation and declared it good. In Jesus, creation was being renewed and restored to its original design.
The physical gestures Jesus used — touching the ears and tongue — communicated directly with a man who could not hear verbal instructions. Christ met this man in his condition, using the language of touch when words could not reach him. This miracle fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy that in the messianic age the ears of the deaf would be unstopped and the tongue of the dumb would sing. The healing took place in Gentile territory, further demonstrating that Christ's restorative power was not limited to Israel but extended to all peoples.
