Healing the Woman with the Issue of Blood
Primary Reference: Mark 5:25-34
For twelve years, a woman had suffered from a continuous flow of blood that left her ritually unclean, socially isolated, and financially ruined — she had spent all her living on physicians who could not help her. Hearing about Jesus, she pressed through the crowd with desperate faith, reasoning, "If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole." The moment she touched the hem of His garment, the bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was healed.
Jesus immediately perceived that power had gone out from Him. Though surrounded by a pressing crowd, He asked, "Who touched my clothes?" The disciples thought the question absurd given the crush of people, but Jesus knew the difference between accidental contact and the touch of faith. The trembling woman came forward, fell before Him, and told the whole truth. Jesus responded with words of extraordinary tenderness: "Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague."
This miracle is profoundly layered with meaning. Under Levitical law, the woman's condition made her perpetually unclean, and anyone she touched became unclean. Yet when she touched Jesus, the flow of impurity was reversed — she became clean. The twelve years of her suffering paralleled the twelve years of Jairus' daughter's life, and both miracles occurred simultaneously, intertwined by the Gospel writers. Her healing demonstrates that no condition is too chronic, no person too marginalized, and no faith too desperate for Christ to honor.
